If you want to feel a tad more intimidated, consider Lockheed Martin’s sheer size for a moment. After all, the company receives one of every 14 dollars doled out by the Pentagon. In fact, its government contracts, thought about another way, amount to a “Lockheed Martin tax” of $260 per taxpaying household in the United States, and no weapons contractor has more power or money to wield to defend its turf. It spent $12 million on congressional lobbying and campaign contributions in 2009 alone. Not surprisingly, it’s the top contributor to the incoming House Armed Services Committee chairman, Republican Howard P. “Buck” McKeon of California, giving more than $50,000 in the most recent election cycle. It also tops the list of donors to Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), the powerful chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and the self-described “#1 earmarks guy in the U.S. Congress.”

(A propos de Lockheed, l’état des lieu du projet JSF F-35 n’est pas brillant)

L’excellente interview/profil de Barrack Obama dans Vanity Fair (si vous ne l’avez pas encore lue, c’est un must)

“You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” he said. “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.” He mentioned research that shows the simple act of making decisions degrades one’s ability to make further decisions. It’s why shopping is so exhausting. “You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia.” The self-discipline he believes is required to do the job well comes at a high price. “You can’t wander around,” he said. “It’s much harder to be surprised. You don’t have those moments of serendipity. You don’t bump into a friend in a restaurant you haven’t seen in years. The loss of anonymity and the loss of surprise is an unnatural state. You adapt to it, but you don’t get used to it—at least I don’t.”

Confession of a car salesman
Edmunds.com envoie un journaliste undercover apprendre les grosses ficelles de la vente de voitures:

The process begins by asking the customer how much they want for a monthly payment. Usually, they say, about $300. “Then, you just say, ‘$300… up to?’ And they’ll say, ‘Well, $350.’ Now they’ve just bumped themselves $50 a month. That’s huge.” You then fill in $350 under the monthly payment box. Michael said you could use the “up to” trick with the down payment too. “If Mr. Customer says he wants to put down $2000, you say, “Up to?” And he’ll probably bump himself up to $2500.” Michael then wrote $2,500 in the down payment box of the 4-square worksheet.
The final box on the 4-square was for the trade-in. This was where the most profit could be made. Buyers are so eager to get out of their old car and into a new one, they overlook the true value of the trade-in. The dealership is well aware of this weakness and exploits it.

Petit article intéressant de Now I know: L’Albanie est 99ème pays du monde en PIB/habitant avec en moyenne 8000$/an. Et malgré ces faibles moyens, la marque de voiture la plus souvent croisée sur leur route est… Mercedes.
Voici pourquoi

J’aime beaucoup le Bonus Fact:

Citation

The official Mercedes-Benz Museum is in Stuttgart, Germany (not Albania, sorry), and is home to all things Mercedes. According to Autoblog, it’s also home to the world’s “strongest artificially generated tornado.” The museum, as designed, did not have fire doors; therefore, in case of fire, smoke would accumulate and spread throughout the building. The 34.4 meter (37.2 yard) high tornado is the solution — it “create[s] a jet stream that draws smoke out of the building’s corridors and funnels it upwards and out an exhaust vent on the roof.” Neat.
